The Man Behind the Craft: Daisuke Urakawa and the Legacy of Tatami
In the heart of Kumamoto’s historic tatami industry, a man stands as a bridge between tradition and innovation—Daisuke Urakawa, the leader of Urakawa Shoten. His work is not just about commerce; it is about preserving a centuries-old craft and ensuring that the beauty of tatami lives on for generations to come.
The Guardian of Quality
Urakawa Shoten, founded in 1906, has been a key player in Japan’s tatami industry for over a century. As a wholesaler, the company plays a crucial role in connecting farmers, craftsmen, and businesses like Kohaku. Daisuke Urakawa himself carries forward this legacy, selecting only the finest rush grass (igusa) from farmers and entrusting skilled artisans to bind and finish each mat. This meticulous process ensures that every Kohaku Zen Mat reflects the authenticity and excellence of traditional tatami.
But selecting the right igusa is no easy task. At the auctions, where wholesalers like Urakawa bid for raw materials, the price is determined in a single, precise bid—down to the yen. This is where Urakawa’s sharp eye comes into play. Years of experience allow him to assess the youth, nutrition, and overall health of each batch of igusa, predicting how well it will age and retain its color over time. His decisions shape the final product, making him an unsung hero behind every tatami mat we produce.
A Changing Landscape
When Urakawa entered the industry at the age of 21, there were approximately 1,400 igusa farmers in Japan. Today, that number has dwindled to fewer than 200. Likewise, the number of wholesalers in Yatsushiro, the heart of Japan’s igusa trade, has fallen to around 20. These figures reflect the larger decline of the tatami industry, as modern lifestyles shift away from traditional Japanese flooring.
Despite these challenges, Urakawa remains committed to the craft. When asked about the biggest challenge facing the industry, he points to the need for increased production. “Tatami makers need to do more to promote their work,” he says. “At the same time, we must create new demand, including overseas markets.”
A Shared Mission
At Kohaku, we share Urakawa’s vision. His expertise and dedication ensure that the tatami we bring to the world is of the highest quality. By introducing the Kohaku Zen Mat, we are not just selling a product; we are sustaining an art form, supporting skilled craftsmen, and creating new opportunities for the industry.
Daisuke Urakawa’s story is a reminder that behind every beautiful tatami mat is a network of passionate individuals working tirelessly to keep the tradition alive. With their help, we are bringing tatami into the modern world—one mat at a time.
