A study titled "Learning Effect in the Classroom of the Tatami Mat by Schoolchildren," published in 2009, explored the effects of tatami on students' learning environments, uncovering some fascinating results.

The Study Overview

Researchers from the University of Kitakyushu investigated the impact of tatami mats on both learning performance and emotional states among elementary and middle school students. The study involved setting up two different types of classrooms: one equipped with tatami mats (referred to as the "tatami classroom") and another with a regular wooden floor. The students were given simple math problems to solve over a period of 30 minutes in both environments.

Key Findings: Tatami Boosts Concentration and Relaxation

  1. Increased Focus: Students in the tatami classroom showed a substantial increase in the number of questions they attempted compared to those in the regular classroom. This suggests that tatami mats helped the students maintain better focus and productivity during their tasks. While the total number of answers increased, the accuracy rate of the answers remained consistent between the two environments, indicating that the students were not just rushing through the problems but were genuinely more engaged.

  2. Relaxation and Comfort: The study also conducted a survey to gauge students' feelings about the different classroom environments. Around 75% of the students felt more relaxed in the tatami classroom. Additionally, the majority found the scent of tatami (made from Igusa grass) to be calming. The survey results highlighted how the natural elements of tatami, such as its texture and fragrance, contribute to a more peaceful and focused state of mind.

  3. Reduced Fatigue: When students rated their level of fatigue after working in both environments, those in the tatami classroom reported feeling less tired. This finding suggests that tatami can create a more conducive environment for prolonged concentration without inducing mental exhaustion.
